[18 March, 2023] LANDMARK and BELOWGROUND present “Double Technical”, a public exhibition and dynamic retail concept featuring the first large-scale installation of a basketball court by contemporary artist Tyrrell Winston, in collaboration with creative agency UNVEIL LIMITED.
Upon the occasion of Art Basel in Hong Kong, a 12x10m installation of a basketball court will take centre stage in the LANDMARK Atrium, challenging convention in the artist’s usual fashion by bringing a typically outdoor space into the building. Tyrrell Winston will make his first trip to Hong Kong for the exhibition, where a series of new works will be on display, inviting the viewer to explore what he calls the “embedded history” through his found object and mixed media works. “Double Technical” will be available for public viewing from 18 March, 2023 through until 31 March, 2023.

A Detroit and New York-based artist, Tyrrell Winston’s practice results from years of obsessively collecting, organising and reconfiguring discarded objects, examining the permanent energy left behind within them. With basketball an overarching motif throughout his oeuvre, “Double Technical” was born while visiting and discovering images of abandoned gymnasiums in metropolitan areas in the United States.
“The paintings started singularly, just one athlete signature over and over again. Like being punished, having to write on a chalk board. But the pairings came about as something a little more personal for me,” states the artist. “None of the paintings ever look the same but in the same way athletes or celebrities don’t limit themselves to signing a certain number of autographs I make paintings of the same autographs regularly. It’s not so much about whose signature it is, but the idea of fame and infamy, mortality and immortality.”
The court installation is a further exploration of the artist’s obsession with sport fanaticism and the cult of the celebrity athlete. Winston co-opts signatures and memorabilia through acts of vandalism and forgery, challenging the value of signed objects and ideas around fame, grandiosity and authenticity. With visitors able to play basketball and capture the moment inside the installation, “Double Technical” provides an interactive aspect that invites the public to experience artworks in their myriad of often unconventional forms.
Connecting global initiatives to local perspectives, the show will extend from LANDMARK ATRIUM to a unique retail experience at BELOWGROUND, transformed into a locker room where further artworks such as the “Punishment Paintings” will be on display. At the same time, a series of limited-edition merchandise and a special capsule collection with Benjamin Edgar, the object company founded by Chicago-based designer, Benjamin Edgar Gott, will also be available. The pop-up store at BELOWGROUND starts from 17 March, 2023. Limited quantities available, while stocks last.
Coinciding with the Art Month, 8 galleries and Sotheby’s auction house located in Central will be collaborating for the first time in a community initiative, “BE INSPIRED IN CENTRAL – ART SCENE”. During this period, a series of exhibitions will also be on view at:
• Sotheby’s: Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin (L) and My Heart is Flying to the Universe mirror room. The pumpkin is famously recognised as central to Kusama’s widely celebrated oeuvre, appearing throughout the artist’s work from flat canvases and abstract painting to gallery-wide installations (location: LANDMARK Atrium)
