LANDMARK Welcomes “FUTURALAND” – FUTURA’s Largest Public Installation Launches Today

A Collaboration between AllRightsReserved, FUTURA & Futura Laboratories

Hong Kong, 3rd June, 2021  LANDMARK and BELOWGROUND welcome back to Hong Kong, the legendary contemporary artist FUTURA (a.k.a. FUTURA2000), who has officially landed to debut his latest creation – the X-6000, a 6-meter tall rocket ship – at “FUTURALAND”: a public installation and dynamic temporal retail execution in collaboration with globally renowned creative studio, AllRightsReserved (ARR), and the artist’s brand and design studio Futura Laboratories.

Organized and curated by AllRightsReserved, in partnership with LANDMARK and BELOWGROUND, “FUTURALAND” features a large-scale 6-meter tall rocket ship surrounded by 7 FL-006 alien-like sculptural forms, each spanning 1.8 meters tall. The spacethemed visual journey is the artist’s largest public installation to date, and will be available for public viewing (free admission) for a 2-week period at the LANDMARK ATRIUM in Central, Hong Kong from 3rd June (evening) to 16th June.

The impact and dynamism that “FUTURALAND” will bring to the city is a welcome boost of energy. The iconic artist, FUTURA, has traveled a long journey to Hong Kong to take us on an intergalactic-themed journey, starting from the launch pad of the LANDMARK ATRIUM, and extending to a unique retail experience at BELOWGROUND: a special “FUTURALAND” x Futura Laboratories pop-up store, featuring limited-edition items from close collaborators including Off-White, Billionaire Boys Club, and SILLYTHING. Items will be available exclusively at the Pop-Up Store starting from 4th June (Fri) 11AM HKT. Limited quantities available, while stocks last.

“Art and contemporary culture is an important component of the LANDMARK and BELOWGROUND experience – “FUTURALAND” demonstrates our commitment to continually bring new forms of excitement to the city,” says Mr. Raymond Chow, Executive Director of Hongkong Land. “I am very pleased to welcome the artist, FUTURA, who is in Hong Kong to lead us on this journey to new creative frontiers.”

FUTURA (born Leonard Hilton McGurr) was known as early as the 1970s for his radical approach in the “street”, introducing abstraction to a predominately letter-based discipline. During this period, he also came to Hong Kong for the first time as a 19-year old in the US Navy and has continually visited the city over the past few decades, often referring to Hong Kong as one of his “adopted second-homes”.

“I want to introduce people to who I am, and my body of work. I would like to get people to obviously become familiar with my character universe, and the idea behind my characters and the perception in a playful way. They are coming from somewhere and they arrived here. Of course, this project with this spaceship, the alien figures help tell that kind of playful story, kind of my own fantasy as far as the characters,” states FUTURA.

AllRightsReserved’s founder SK Lam, the organizer and curator of “FUTURALAND”, states: “There’s no doubt that FUTURA is a true art legend along with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. We’re pleased to debut FUTURA’s largest public installation in Hong Kong. With the evolving global pandemic, there are certain constraints to hold a local event but I’m glad to have FUTURA here in person to witness the opening with us.”

About FUTURA

A pioneer when Graffiti met the formal gallery ecosystem, artist FUTURA (AKA FUTURA2000) was known as early as the 1970s for his radical approach in the street, introducing abstraction to a predominately letter-based discipline. Born Leonard Hilton McGurr, his work on canvas caught attention in the 1980s, establishing him as a leading voice within a wider movement that included the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Self-taught in what he calls “the subway school”, FUTURA is celebrated alongside his friends Dondi White and Rammellzee for his progressiveness and of-the-moment dynamism. His work has been exhibited at notable museums such as MoCA in Los Angeles, MoMA P.S.1 in New York, the New Museum in New York—as well as, most recently, the Boston MFA and Palais de Tokyo. Futura’s current gallery partners are Eric Firestone Gallery in New York and Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo, founded by Takashi Murakami. Through his dedicated design studio and product brand Futura Laboratories, McGurr has collaborated with partners such as Louis Vuitton, Comme des Garçons, Chanel, Nike, and Off-White; he has also designed music packaging for The Clash and DJ Krush, and performance visuals for Lupe Fiasco and Virgil Abloh. The artist is managed on an exclusive basis—by the hybrid creative studio and artist management firm ICNCLST.

About AllRightsReserved Ltd.

Established in 2003, AllRightsReserved (ARR) is a creative studio based in Hong Kong. Over the years, ARR has designed and planned marketing campaigns for numerous internationally renowned brands. Bringing to life various large-scale projects in Asia for our clients, we often work with friends and partners in the contemporary art world, creating highly influential and outstanding projects. These large-scale projects not only receive attention but also allow the public’s participation. ARR’s long-term partner is the world-renowned American contemporary artist KAWS. Beginning with KAWS:PASSING THROUGH in 2010, and continuing to KAWS:HOLIDAY – the giant inflatable sculpture COMPANION, exhibited in various relaxed positions has travelled to a number of different cities in South Korea (July 2018), Taiwan (January 2019), Hong Kong (March 2019), Japan (July 2019), Space (August 2020) and United Kingdom (May 2021).

Among all the projects, one of the most memorable one for Hong Kongers and even the entire Asia, is the art project with the Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman. In 2013, we brought in a giant yellow rubber
duck sculpture to the world-famous Victoria Harbour. After the unprecedented success of “Rubber Duck World: Hong Kong Station”, ARR planned three permanent giant outdoor sculptures in Chengdu, Shenzhen and Changsha, 3 major cities in China.

The projects have won unanimous praise, and set a record for the number of participants. ARR pushes the boundaries of venue and space, establishing a new and unparalleled art display method recognized by the industry and the public.
